A cavalier called Goring to Highdown House did ride.
Pursued by Cromwell's army, wanting a place to hide.
He hid inside an elm tree to wait for their retreat
But when he was discovered his heart it skipped a beat.

On the fifteenth of June when the moon shines bright,
the headless ghost goes riding into the summer night.
From Pirton on his white horse to Hitchin he will fly.
This man will be a legend, his ghost will never die.

"Oh you cavalier you've made a great mistake.
We've come to take your life and you cannot escape!"
With one fell swoop they caught him and butchered off his head.
A piercing scream ran through the air as Goring fell down dead.

On the fifteenth of June when the moon shines bright,
the headless ghost goes riding into the summer night.
From Pirton on his white horse to Hitchin he will fly.
This man will be a legend, his ghost will never die.

Watching from a window was a lady all in grey.
When she saw her sweetheart slaughtered she could no longer stay.
She escaped to Hitchin Priory and hid within the walls.
Her ghost now walks about the grounds on a moonlit June nightfall.

On the fifteenth of June when the moon shines bright,
the headless ghost goes riding into the summer night.
From Pirton on his white horse to Hitchin he will fly.
This man will be a legend, his ghost will never die.

About this Song

I came across this legendary figure of the headless horseman when looking for a village to relocate to and was fascinated by the story because I have a keen interest in history. The song retells the story of the Cavalier Goring who was captured by the Roundheads at Highdown House ,Pirton . The headless ghost supposedly returns every year on the anniversary of his death and rides on his white horse towards Hitchin.
